FROM ANIMAL TO YOUR TATTOO

Since 2020, my “Signatures” project has offered tattoos inspired by the sound signatures of animals.

From the Humpback Whale to the Tawny Owl, including the Eurasian Lynx and the Laughing Frog, I give form to animal sounds by offering an artistic interpretation of spectrograms , these visual representations of sounds.

For many people who contact me for their project, it is an original way of inking an animal, not in a figurative way, but through an abstract motif of which only the person tattooed knows the meaning.

Each tattoo is unique, created from a documented sound previously researched in scientific literature or in sound libraries.

This approach, in its intention, allows me to connect human and non-human animals, sounds and images, art and science, to pay homage to the beauty and fragility of life.

"I really like this project. It symbolizes what we hear. I find the flashes beautiful, very abstract, airy, refined, suspended. It's beautiful because everyone can see something different in them. It's not fixed."

FROM SPECTROGRAM TO DRAWING

From these spectrograms, I propose a drawn interpretation , as close as possible to the initial spectrogram or by creating variants with superpositions, symmetries, etc. depending on your aesthetic choices.

An example with the European Golden Oriole:

"Besides the fact that these are original tattoos, seen nowhere else, they are extremely elaborate.

They are the result of long and meticulous research on each species and each song.

They are based on scientific data but are also adapted to be aesthetically pleasing.”

Eva, 25 years old

WHAT ARE MY SOURCES?

My tattoos are inspired by songs, cries, calls or vocalizations of all kinds of animals.

These can be emblematic animals (such as the humpback whale, the golden eagle, the gray wolf, etc.), but also more common animals (the bat, the tit, the badger, etc.), or even very specific species such as the swallow-tailed bat or the collared fantail.

The sources of the recordings and spectrograms are varied:

  • Articles from the scientific literature

  • Sound databases and libraries

  • Collaboration with audio-naturalists

  • Your personal recordings (of the animal that shares your life for example).

FLASH AND CUSTOM PROJECTS

I offer designs created from my own research, based on animals that inspire me or that I want to highlight. These designs are regularly offered in "FLASH" on my Instagram account and are then available for adoption.

But most of the time, I work according to your requests around a particular animal and I then create a "PERSONALIZED PROJECT ", tailor -made!

HANDPOKE TATTOO

Getting a "Handpoke" tattoo means getting a tattoo done by hand, point by point, without an electric machine (dermograph), like traditional methods.

The vast majority of tattooed people who go under my needles agree that the sensation is much less painful than with a machine and that the approach is gentler . But of course, everything depends on the project, the sensitivity of each person and your general state of health.

By working by hand, the skin is less stressed and healing is also gentle.

You should expect sessions to last longer than with a machine: creating a handpoke tattoo can take 2 to 3 times longer than with a machine.

“The slowness of handpoke reflects the delicacy, sobriety, simplicity and ancestry of this primitive art.”

Samuel, 42 years old

ECO-RESPONSIBLE APPROACH

Being a tattoo artist today also means taking seriously the need to think about the environmental impact of the practice of tattooing itself.

I am committed to reducing this impact as much as possible, by using vegan inks and products, eco-responsible materials and limiting waste as much as possible.

Here are some examples:

  • Using alternatives to conventional plastics (such as cellophane, widely used in tattooing) to cover and protect surfaces. I use cornstarch-based bioplastics, such as the ECOTAT and ORGANINK brands. Compared to petrochemical-based plastics, their production consumes 65% less energy and generates 68% fewer greenhouse gases.

  • The small, single-use cups used to hold the ink are made of paper, not plastic.

  • No Vaseline either during your session (also widely used in tattooing), but organic vegetable oils produced in France.

  • Another example to limit the production of waste linked to the single-use use of certain consumables: instead of throwing away the razor that I use during the session, I give it to you at the end so that it can continue to live its life as a razor with you.

I am committed to doing my best, and even if everything is not perfect, I know that you are also sensitive to it.

Using this equipment has a cost and impacts the price of your tattoo: it is therefore also your choice to favor this approach and I thank you for it!

"I loved the concept as soon as I discovered it. It represents the importance of our relationship with nature and the beings that inhabit it, which we must preserve at all costs."

A COMMITTED TRIBUTE

The "Signatures" project is a way to raise awareness of the threats facing the animal world by exploring the richness of their sound world. Each tattoo becomes an act of awareness, inviting us to listen to the symphony of nature, to recognize its beauty and fragility.

While it's about making these tattoos the spokespersons for animals, it's also about supporting those who are committed on the ground to their defense and protection.

Every year, thanks to your “Signature” tattoos, donations are made to organizations working in favor of life, animals, and biodiversity.

Because we will all benefit from cultivating a relationship of wonder and friendship with the living, rather than dissociating ourselves from them.

Because our non-human roommates are the innocent victims of human activities that we can choose to avoid,

Because during this time, some people make the small, irresponsible and cowardly choice to destroy, enslave, hunt down, torture, kill, dominate.

THANK YOU to all of you who support this project and thanks to whom these donations are possible.
